  • Description

NeCCS allows calculation of Hazard Quotients (HQ) and Risk Quotients (RQ) for substances and preparations used and discharged offshore, according to the algorithms contained within the Chemical Hazard Assessment and Risk Management (CHARM) Model.

    Why new software?

EOSCA members have worked successfully with the current CHARM Calculator for some years, but certain limitations of the software mean that it cannot easily be updated for changes to the CHARM manual. In addition, users gave feedback on enhancements that they would like and NeCCS incorporates many new features and benefits including all the latest algorithms as included in CHARM User Guide Version 1.4.

    Who is it for?

The tool is used by chemical suppliers, operators and other chemical users working with exploration and production chemicals in the North Sea.

    What authority does it carry?

The development of the software was commissioned by EOSCA, and their representatives have worked closely with the developers to ensure that the software rigorously implements the algorithms of the CHARM model. Results from this software should be used in preference to those from the CHARM Calculator, since they implement changes to the CHARM Model which are not incorporated in the CHARM Calculator. The results can be used to support applications for permits from the UK DTI and other National Regulators.

What do I need on my computer?

NeCCS is an independent product, not reliant on any other applications on your system, and can run on currently supported versions of Microsoft Windows. It is available for both single-computer users and groups of users in a networked environment.

    Minimum Requirements

NeCCS has been developed to run on supported Microsoft Windows operating systems 2000 and XP. Other operating systems are untested.

    Windows 2000

NeCCS is supported for Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4. Service Packs can be downloaded from support.microsoft.com. To find out what you have installed, start My Computer, then select Help, About. The version of Windows will be displayed, including details of any service packs which have been installed.
A 1GHz or faster processor is recommended and the minimum processor requirement is a 166 MHz Intel Pentium-class, or an AMD Opteron, AMD Athlon 64, or AMD Athlon XP. To find out the type and speed of your processor, right-click on My Computer and select Properties. The General tab should display both the type and speed. This will also show the amount of RAM (memory available as workspace). 256Mb of RAM is recommended and the minimum requirement is 128Mb.

    Windows XP

NeCCS is supported for Windows XP with Service Pack 2. Service Packs can be downloaded from support.microsoft.com. Service Pack 2 is too large to be practical for downloading at the connection speed of a dial-up telephone connection to the internet and the service pack should be loaded from a CD, available from Microsoft.
A 1GHz or faster processor is recommended and the minimum processor requirement is a 233 MHz Intel Pentium-class, or an AMD Opteron, AMD Athlon 64, or AMD Athlon XP. To find out the type and speed of your processor, right-click on My Computer and select Properties. The General tab should display both the type and speed. This will also show you the amount of RAM (memory available as workspace). 512Mb of RAM is recommended and the minimum requirement is 256Mb.

    Other installation requirements (client)

NeCCS will display best on a 1024×768 (or higher) resolution display, with 256 colours. 200 Mb of free hard disk space is requires to install NeCCS. Following install the program will occupy only 160Mb. It is recommended that other applications are closed before installing NeCCS.

    Server installation requirements

NeCCS uses a SQL Server database, and the network install assumes that the NeCCS database can be attached to a SQL server which is accessible by the client computers.

    Training

NeCCS has extensive help files within it but its use is not immediately intuitive. Users are encouraged to attend a training workshop. Workshops will be held as soon as sufficient interest is demonstrated. Please watch this space for details of future workshops.
